Taipei Municipal Shilin Elementary School (TMSES) was established in 1895 — during the Ching Dynasty. TMSES is a school with a history of more than one hundred years after experiencing changes both in her system and name: 1974.01.01 to date ─ Taipei Municipal Shilin Elementary School (TMSES) 1949 ─Public Shilin School under the supervision of Yang Ming Shan Bureau, Taipei 1945─Public Shilin School of Taipei County (after Taiwan was resurrected from Japan’s occupation) 1941.04 ─ Public Shilin School 1941.04.01 ─ Public Shilin School 1898.10.01 ─ Public Pa Chi Lan School 1895.06 ─ Chi Shan Yen SchoolThe school district had been designated a dozen of public schools other than TMSES during the past decades. Taiwan’s society has experienced humongous changes -- the development of commercial and industrial activities, and the booster of population from the other areas of the Island. Number of the students registered to TMSES remains high since TMSES is located in downtown Shilin district. However, the school district has deteriorated in quality because of the rampant increase of markets and food stands, continuous influx of population, and the decline of local culture. Consequently local educators have to work even harder than ever. Fortunately, the community of Shilin is enriched in its culture and beauty regardless of time. TMSES has enlarged its teaching resource, including the Teaching Material Room of Local Culture, the Room of School History, and the Room of Insects and Shells under the support of the local residents. Besides being used as teaching aids these rooms are opened to the public in hopes that the local culture will be shinning again some day.
